      •  Caring For Your New Puppy

        Feeding Your Puppy:

        • We will provide a small bag of the puppy's current food brand. If you choose an alternative brand, it is important to transition properly to avoid stomach upset. Start by adding the new brand to the current brand. ¼ new to ¾ current for 2-3 days, ½ new to ½ current for 2-3 days, and ¾ new to ¼ current for 2-3 days.

        Potty Training:

        • Prairie Wheatens puppies are pellet box trained. However, this does not mean they are fully potty trained. For the safety of our puppies, we train inside until they have proper immunity to go outside (after they get their last shot from the veterinarian). It is a great option to potty train your puppy to go outside.

        Sleeping:

        • Sleep training your puppy is super important. We all need sleep, including your fur baby. For bedtime, make a cozy space for them to sleep, such as a dog crate or kennel, and include their blanket that smells like mom. Ensure their sleeping spot is not too big as they will have accidents.

        Brushing & Combing Fur:

        • Brush or comb your fur baby every day to avoid mats. Especially make sure that you brush their legs and elbows where mats occur more frequently.
        • Use pet-friendly detangling spray when combing or brushing.
        • Make sure you brush both before and after a bath.

        Ears:

        • Avoid getting water in their ears. Make sure to dry any water that does get in their ears.
        • Ear cleaners can be used, but consult your local Veterinarian clinic to see what they recommend.
        • Ask your vet about plucking or cutting the ear hair and convey this to your groomer on the first salon day for your puppy.

        Bathing:

        • Always bathe puppies from a young age to get them used to baths.
        • Avoid bathing puppies too often as they can get sick if they get too cold. Typically you want to bathe at least once a month, although this can vary.
        • Always avoid water in the eyes and ears.
        • Ensure your puppy sees baths positively and not scary. Make bath time a treat time for your dogs. Always reward puppies before, during, and after a bath with soft voices, treats, and lots of love.

        Nails & Teeth:

        • Keep nails trimmed either by cutting or filling the nails.
        • If you do not know how or are not comfortable cutting their nails, it is best to take dogs to a groomer.
        • Talk to the Veterinarian clinic about the best toothpaste and toothbrushes for your puppies.

A little note from Prairie Wheatens
Our dogs are part of our family and are very special to us. Any puppies are all raised in our home, with constant interaction, and we love every one of them. We are not a puppy mill meaning we have a limited number of puppies for sale each year. If you are interested in welcoming one of our fur babies, contact Prairie Wheatens for any available pups or to be put on the next litter's wait list. Our litter's are extremely special to us and will be placed solely in homes that promise to give the best care to these puppies.
